Modems
Upgrading your modem is a great solution for most people. You will be
able to surf the Internet without having to wait everywhere.
Only one real option is a 57.6K modem.
Everything else is obsolete already.
Prices range from $20 to $200. Watch out for winmodems as they have
been the torture for many people.
Other Options
-
DSL / ISDN
- These are usually provided by your local telephone company. ISDN
tends to be more expensive than DSL. DSL can surpass speeds of
512kbps and are generally quite affordable for a standard 192kbps
line
- Check with your local phone company for these upgrade options..
- Cable Modem
- Not available in lots of areas but where it is available it is
also quite affordable. Some cable companies require that you also
dial-in to there service at the same time you are recieving
downloads from them. This forces you to either tie up your phone
line or purchase an additional line, it might still be worth the
speed, but not viable for gamers.
- Check with your cable company for these upgrade companies.
-
Satellite
- Satellite also uses a modem to dial-in to the net and upload or
send information form the host computer.
- Not the best option but the only one available for some people
check with the major satellite companies like DirectTV.
